Hand Beaded Ostrich Egg

Ostrich eggs are the largest of all eggs — on average they are 5 to 6 inches long and up to 5 inches wide. They weigh over 3 pounds, over 20 times the weight of a chicken egg. They are glossy cream-colored, with thick shells marked by small pits. A grown man can stand on a filled ostrich egg and it won’t break.

The incubation period is 35 to 45 days and fewer than 10% of nests survive the 9 week period of laying and incubation as they are highly prized by predators and of the surviving born chicks, only 15% of those survive past one year of age. Ostriches in captivity have lived over 60 years.

Ostrich eggs are mainly used for;

  • Nutritional purposes, eating.
  • The shells are used in many ways.
  • Decorative purposes. Carved, beaded etc
  • Water bottles. A hole is made in the top of the shell and the contents are removed (eaten) and the empty shell is cleansed, then filled with precious water. The opening is stuffed with grass or tree bark to prevent leakage. These water filled eggs are often hidden and buried and dug up for use later.
